Random Encounters: Three

Hey guys. Again, my apologies for the screw-up with Friday’s post.

Not much to say this week. The past couple weeks I’ve really been struggling to have a post every day. I suspect the quality has been suffering for it, but there’s not a whole lot I can do about that. It’s important to me, on a personal level, that I do make a post every day even if it means posting stuff I’m not completely satisfied with.

  1. I found your site by StumbleUpon and just about broke my neck with the doubletake I did on your site title and domain name. You see, I tried this very kind of site back in the early 1990’s before the advent of blogging. I even had the same exact domain name and I had the same desire to post an encounter every day. Except I didn’t last nearly as long as you already have. I commend you.

But seeing your “Random Encounters: Three” post, I thought you might like the one suggestion that I’ve always wished somebody had given me before I burned out on it: Have a submission form on your site where people can submit their own encounters. Then you can shift from the mode of having to come up with an original idea every single day to the mode of contributing your own when you have them and editing (and crediting) the ideas of others when your own creative juices aren’t flowing so perfectly.

You’ll find that there are a lot of people who would love to see their name at the top of a post they contributed. A link to their own blogs would encourage even more people to submit. In this way, the project can become much more sustainable.

Good luck with it. I’ve always looked back fondly on my EAD project and wished I’d stuck with it longer. It’s a great idea.

  2. Life can be funny, sometimes. There have been a few times where I’ve struck upon what I thought was a great and (so I thought) obscure idea, only to find out that someone else had the same idea.

I appreciate the advice, and I’ve considered the idea of guest posts already… However, ultimately, I started this blog for one simple reason: It’s intended to force me to exercise my creative juices.

The reason I made a blog instead of just keeping a private journal or something was so that I’d have the pressure of an audience and a deadline to force me to stick with it (well, that and the fact that, like every blogger, I’m an attention whore).

Of course, circumstances change. I would not be at all surprised to find myself soliciting ideas or perhaps even fully-fledged posts sometime in the future. It is not among my plans currently, however.
