4th Edition Monster Math Cruncher

One of the great things about 4th edition is that creating a monster is a fairly simple process. You follow a few formulas, look up on some tables to figure out how much damage it should do, and then come up with abilities you like.

Unfortunately, those formulas and tables can be a bit tedious… but no more! I’ve made a script that will go through all the formulas for you, so that you can focus on the fun part: making the new abilities!

  1. Damn, you’re good!

Many, many thanks for this :)

  2. np, glad you like it!

  3. You, sir, are a god!

    This is *awesome*.

(Now if only the same could be done with traps.) ;)

  4. Not a bad idea, I’ll look into it. If, as with monsters, traps are based on a lot of formulas, it should be pretty simple.

  5. Yeah, I just took a look at the book. Unless I’m missing something huge, it doesn’t look like it even has explicit rules for creating traps, oddly. I did a bit of brief research, and neither perception DCs nor damage seem to be based on the DC and damage by level tables…

So, in short, it’d be pretty much impossible to make a generator without more info and formulas.

  6. Holy crap. I’m having trouble beleiving your script is correct, not because it seems extremly difficult/tedious (though it does actually), and certainly not because I think you’re incapable, but because it seems too good to be true…

This could net you a crapload of page views. In fact, I’ll make sure it does.

    P.S. you rock

  7. Actually, on the flip side of that, would you even want more pageviews? I know bandwidth can be expensive, and I don’t think you’re making any money from this site… are you?

  8. Nope, but I’m not worried about it. It’s an enviable problem. :) Go ahead and post it where ever you’d like. It doesn’t take much bandwidth anyways (there’s literally 3 images on that page, they’re all quite small, and it all runs client side so the page only has to be loaded once).

Incidentally, regarding the math, as far as I can tell it’s all correct per the guidelines in the DMG. I’ve already corrected several errors, though, and if you notice any please let me know!

  9. Yeah…trap rules are silly. I was just hoping you would see something I was missing. Maybe a splatbook is on the way that we don’t know about.

    Still AWESOME monster generator.

  11. I can get to the monster generator but it doesnt do anything when I click ‘generate’.

  12. It doesn’t work in Internet Explorer. Sorry. I recommend trying Firefox instead.

  13. This site is fantastic! Thank you for creating such useful programs. I have had a renewed interest in gaming since D&D 4th and your contributions make it that much better.

    Well done!
