Gone’ Fishin’

I’m going to be taking this week off while I decide what to do with this blog…

I really, really enjoyed making monsters for Ravnica, and I’m considering altering the focus of this blog to 4th edition so that I can continue doing fun stuff like that. Maybe even put out my own monster manual of collected entries when I get enough…

  1. I have been reading your blog since I heard the news of 4th edition’s release. I have cribbed lots of notes and enjoyed every post. Frankly, I’d love for the blog to become 4e focused, as I have been reading it and adapting it to 4e already.

But I’m sure you are aware of the 4e naysayers. Though in my own experience they will fade away in a few months once thier favorite thing has been included in some published product.

  2. Man, you just gotta do what ever you want. There’s enough people that play 4th to do it I think.
@GlennZilla- You’re totally right. My group is playing 3.5 at least for 2 or 3 more months. When the Item Compendium or what it is now comes out, we might switch back. I was hoping they’d release the PHB2 a little sooner than they did.

  3. I really enjoyed the Ravnica articles. I even used the Elemental Weird in our last session. Boy the lock and the wizard were pissed. I’ll continue reading your blog wether you decide to stay with generic encounters or to go and make 4e monsters (there really are too few in the MM).

  4. @GlennZilla, Sebastion: I’m not really worried about a backlash against 4e so much as a backlash against choosing a system at all. In the creation and marketing of this blog (what little I did, at least), its system-neutrality was always one of the points I stressed.

@Kapoue: Ooh, that’s really cool! Sounds like the ideal use for it, too, since you had two casters who probably had a few different energy types to hit it with. Did it seem balanced, in your opinion? I haven’t had a chance to playtest any of my stuff, though it’s made using the guidelines in the DMG. In theory it should be balanced, but who knows how well theory works in practice. :)

Incidentally, I find it surprising that so many people think there’s too few monsters in the MM. There’s around 490 stat blocks therein! I don’t know how many ready-to-play monsters there were in the 3.5 Monster Manual, but I’d be surprised if they broke 300.

  5. @Asmor : Well, I fucked up a bit my mix of mobs for this encounter therefore the weirds were too much on the front line. But that’s my fault. The things I changed on your mob after using them was putting their AC to 19 and adding an absorbtion ability/immunity for when it gets attacked with generic non-elemental spells (Eldrich Blast for exemple). I’m probably gonna try it again in 1-2 session as my PCs will probably start attacking a mage-heavy guild soon.

I really like WoW-based mobs (Arcatraz Voidwalkers ftw!). They have great abilities, I’m gonna try to adapt some of them to 4e. Cthun would be soooo fun, but impossible with a little party :P

  6. Good eye, they were actually based off the Vacilitating Voidwalkers in Hell Penn. They were a huge PITA for my blood elf paladin, being exclusive in holy damage, until I discovered that I could use my racial mana tap ability to force them to go arcane.

I thought that was a rare and very cool example of tactics making a fight much easier, and would port over to D&D well.

I was considering doing a similar thing for Azeroth as I did for Ravnica. I almost ran a D&D 4e game in Azeroth. Still might…

  7. Personally, I don’t mind you doing 4E stuff, but I would prefer if this didn’t just focus on it.

I like that this blog has been somewhat system free. Many of the posts you have placed up here have been great inspirations for my own campaigns. And I don’t use D&D at all. In fact, my game is a science fiction/fantasy hybrid using my own personal system. But, I still find a lot of value in the encounters you have posted so far.

So, i guess I am saying that you should do whatever you think you want to do. I just hope some of that is more fun encounters without a specific system or setting in mind.

    The Pretentious Fool’s last blog post..It’s Almost…

  8. I just wanted to chime in with my first comment on your blog to say that I really enjoyed the Ravnica article and will probably pursue a future game in that setting because of it. I agree that some generic content would be nice, but seeing adapted material, or including some 4th ed material with what could otherwise be taken for generic encounters, would be awesome. Heck, I would really enjoy an expansion on the Ravnica article or the establishment of some kind of community project on the topic.

  9. Hey,

I just discovered this blog recently, and I have really enjoyed reading your archives while at work. I think that the Ravnica series is among your best (recent) work, and, as a 4e junkie, would love to see more like it in the future. The crunch is very useful to me because of the lack of quality, accessible 4e content currently available (I’m planning on using your elemental weird in an upcoming session!) and the fluff is well-written and readily applicable.

So, thanks, and I look forward to whatever comes next!
