Monster Maker Linux & Mac

I’ve got some really good news for those of you who aren’t as big a fan of Windows as I am.

I’ve had two people confirm to me that Monster Maker seems to be working under the latest release of Mono on Linux. Presumably, this means it should work on Macs as well. I have no access to a Mac, so I can’t verify, but if anyone wants to give it a try and let me know (hint, hint), that’d be pretty cool.

Special thanks to Jason Ward, for bringing this to my attention, and Maarten Inklaar, for helping me iron out some platform-dependent issues.

  1. I’m on Mac OS X and I installed mono, but it doesn’t work. I don’t know if I’m supposed to do something beyond just installing the framework, but since the Monster Maker is still an .exe file it will not run for me.

  2. Here are instructions on running things under mono: http://mono-project.com/Mono:OSX

It looks like all you need to do is open a terminal, navigate to the directory where you’ve saved the program, and type in:

    mono Monster Maker.exe

(you might need to put quotes around the filename, i.e. mono “Monster Maker.exe”, since it has a space in it, or just rename it to remove the space)

  3. Works like a charm!

I wasn’t able to open my old .mon files, but perhaps that was because I downloaded the standalone version (different versioning?). It seems like it changed file format to .xmon. Or perhaps the version I have in my virtual PC Windows was too old. By the way, you don’t need to rename it, just write mono Monster Maker.exe and it will work like a charm (the means an escaped space, it is what the terminal’s autocomplete will give you if you type mono Monster and press TAB)

  4. I’ve been running it on my Mac for months; that and DDI as well.. and Fallout, Half0Life, etc. … of course, I have Parallels installed… so… that might have something to do with it. =D (snarky snark!)

  5. @Jens: Theoretically, it should be able to open a .mon file made with any version of the program unless I broke compatibility somewhere along the line, which I think I would have mentioned… It’s not impossible, but I don’t remember ever breaking compatibility. Not that my memory’s that hot.

Could you email the .mon files to me so I can see if I can open them, to try and isolate if it’s a problem with the program, the file, or running it on a mac?

  6. Howdy,
@Asmor: Thanks for the kind words! After following your site, using your ideas (hehe…Slivers!) and your apps the least I could do was let you know that it works on my linux box. :D

General Info: I think I may have been using the stand-alone version, all of my files are xmon.

  7. @Jason

Maarten mentioned some instability and that it was having trouble loading mon (but apparently not xmon) files. Have you had any problems with it crashing or with compatibility?

  8. can anyone give me a hand? Ive downloaded and installed mono on MAC, ive tried to install the monster maker but i couldnt, dont know why, i guess i dont know how to use the thing, can anyone help me?
