Quartermaster Updates Are Coming
Tags:
A few times a week I get people emailing me asking if I have any plans on updating my 4e random treasure generator, Quartermaster.
I don’t. Or, at least, I didn’t. However, due to the sheer flood of people asking about it, many of whom have offered to help, and more importantly the fact that I’ve searched very hard and can’t find a single other online random treasure generator (there was at least one windows application which was very similar to Quartermaster, though I’m not sure if it’s still being updated), I’m going to compromise.
Below, you’ll find a spreadsheet (in Excel format, though it’s simple enough it should work in any app. I made it in OpenOffice.org, but Excel is the lingua franca of spreadsheets…). If you fill out the spreadsheet for a particular book, magazine, or adventure, I’ll probably add the stuff to the database. I say probably because I reserve the right to refuse to add something for any reason; most importantly, I’m very strict about how things should be formatted, and I will only add things from Wizards of the Coast products.
All of the formatting instructions are contained in the file. To submit something to me, rename it to “Source name.xls,” e.g. “Player’s Handbook.xls” and then email it to itoltz@gmail.com.
And as I said, I’m very picky about formatting. Everything should be spelled correctly, capitalized correctly, etc. Take particular care to ensure that if there’s an apostrophe in an item’s name, you put 3 backslashes in front of it, e.g. “Mage’s Wand” should be “Mage\\\’s Wand”. Also, I’d hope I wouldn’t have to explain this, but whenever I use double quotes in the instructions, they’re only for expalantion purposes. Unless you have some weird item with quotes in its name, don’t ever use a quote mark.
Oh, and finally make sure you include your name so I can give you credit, and your email address so that if I need to get in touch with you about something I can.

Oh, you might consider posting a comment if you’re planning on typing up a particular source. That way we don’t have two people working on the same thing and wasting their time.
So there wasn’t any luck in pulling info from the wizards db? I think that is what you said you were working on when I originally emailed you.
Basically, no.
It would still be possible, but at the time I was waiting for them to release a promised third part to their API before I started doing anything.
Now, I’ve just simply got no time.
okay, I started working on the AV2… a questions:
When copy pasting the Armor list from the compendium: The apostrophe in item names is of the “high comma” variety… should i put \\\ in front of it or not?
I’m not sure exactly what you mean… but yeah, go ahead and put in the slashes. Better to have them erroneously than to omit them erroneously.
I’ll start work on Adventurer’s Vault 2.
It didn’t state in the spreadsheet, but am I’m supposed to put the \\\ for the book title as well?
Aww, beat me to it by minutes! Curse you Obergnom!
Excellent question. To be honest, it doesn’t matter for the name of the source, that’s mostly for my own reference and it’s going to be replaced with a number when it’s put in the database.
I should mention that for other fields it does matter (e.g. for the section, if there’s an apostrophe you SHOULD put the slashes in.
The only field it doesn’t matter for is the name of the source.
Hey Patch, should we divide the work? I started with armor, maybe you can start with weapons? Do you have a dropbox account? We could collaborate
I do have a dropbox account, tho I just got it a few days ago, and really haven’t learned how to use it properly.
A collab sounds good. I’ll start on weapons. I guess we can discuss which sections we each do after that..?
sounds good. I will just work my way down the alphabet. So I do ammunition, arms etc next. maybe you could do the opposite.
How about we alternate chapters instead?
You:
Armor, Ammunition, Orbs, Staffs, Totems, Arms Slot Items, etc
Me:
Weapons, Holy Symbols, Rods, Tomes, Wands, etc
Bit less confusing than going alphabetically.
Sorry, I do not have the book atm, I will borrow it from a friend to get the page numbers later. So, I have no idea what the order of the chapters is, I just use the compendium and go by their sorting.
so far, I have done armor, amunition, arms, feet, hands, holy symbols and mount. the other categories till mount(according to the compendium) are empty in the AV2
Okay, I’m done with all items of the Ammunition, Armor, Arms, Feet, Hands, Head, Holy Symbol, Mount and Neck category.
As I copy pasted the names from the compendium, this includes all items from these categories in the Item Sets chapter.
Copy and pasting? You heathen! I’m doing it all by hand, so I’ll be slow behind you for sure.
Weapons, orbs, rods, staffs, tomes, totems, wands, and rings done so far. All done in chapter order. Continue more later.
I’ve done Waist items, Wondrous items, and Wondrous lair items, tattoos, and consumables.
All that’s left are the item sets. Since you’ve already done some of them, you should probably do the rest, instead of me sorting through them all to grab the ones you may not have.
Okay, I will do that… Nice, seems like we will be done soon
okay, I am done and I send my part of the list to asmor.
Completing Player’s Handbook 3. just a question about implements. Should it be
Type: Implement Restriction: Staff
or
Type: Implement (Staff) Restriction : “blank”
It should just be “Staff”
sent Player’s Handbook 3 to asmor
Ah, thanks for reminding me. I’ll get that up in the next couple days.
