			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Emperor Ormbast IV was not necessarily beloved by all, but he was widely recognized as a fair, just, and wise ruler. His son, Ormbast V, inherited none of his father&#8217;s good qualities. V is greedy and cruel; he instituted harsh new taxes and terrible laws to punish those who didn&#8217;t pay. He is also petty, not hesitating to order death against any who he perceived as having slighted him.</p>
<p>Arik Andler, was a captain in the royal army, leading a unit of the most elite soldiers the empire had in its service. As such, he and his men were dutybound to follow the emperor&#8217;s decrees. However, time and time again Arik found himself sickened by what he was ordered to do and the direction the empire was heading.</p>
<p>After a great deal of pain and soul-searching, he offered his men a choice: stay and fulfill their oaths to the emperor, or sacrifice their honor in order to fight for the greater good. To a man, they chose to follow Arik.</p>
<p>The renegades dubbed themselves The Oathbreakers. The Oathbreakers are known by their scarlet cowls, which some say they wear to hide their shame, and their insignia: a kite shield cleft in twain.</p>
<p>The Oathbreakers primarily focus on protecting commoners from the Emperor&#8217;s tyranny. They raid tax assessors and instruct any able and willing in the art of guerilla warfare, in order to protect themselves and their families.</p>
<h1>Encounters with The Oathbreakers</h1>
<p>The Emperor puts out a bounty or hires the PCs to fight the Oathbreakers, calling them traitors and cowards.</p>
<p>The PCs are confronted by one of Arik&#8217;s men when they are mistaken to be the Emperor&#8217;s newest lackeys.</p>

<p><b>DC 20:</b> Some mages use chuuls such as these to guard their sanctums. This chuul&#8217;s exoskeleton has been treated so that it is impervious to all but the most egregious damage.</p>
<p><b>DC 25:</b> The chuul&#8217;s tentacled mouth secretes an immobilizing poison.</p>
<p><b>DC 30:</b> The process of hardening the chuul&#8217;s armor maddens it, making it particularly vulnerable to psychic damage.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The feywild, mortal plane and shadowfell form a path which every mortal soul travels. New souls enter the world through the ley nexus in the feywild and, when they shuffle off their mortal coil, exit through the ley nexus of the shadowfell.</p>
<p>Long ago, a fearsome dragon named Monatiss tried to take the power of the shadowfell&#8217;s ley nexus for himself. He succeeded, and for a short time death was no longer a threat, until the gods imbued a great hero with the strength to stop Monatiss. </p>
<p>Monatiss couldn&#8217;t be killed, for it was linked with the ley nexus and doing so would shatter it. Instead, Monatiss was returned to the location of the ley nexus at the foot of the Penumbra Cliffs, along the shores Sea of Despair in a massive cavern barely able to contain the ancient dragon.</p>
<p>There, for countless millenia he has remained, bound by enchanted iron chains forged by Moradin himself. Each link of the chains is as wide as a human is tall and weighs more than the greatest tree in the feywild. The dragon physically reunited with the ley nexus, its function was restored.</p>
<p>And so now, when a mortal dies, its soul passed through to the shadowfell, flies across the Sea of Despair, and enters the astral sea through Monatiss.</p>

<p><b>DC 20:</b> Troggles are barely-sentient abberant magical beasts deployed to protect underwater sites. They are little more than living weapons.</p>
<p><b>DC 25:</b> The hooks covering a troggle easily become entangled with potential enemies, allowing them to latch onto them and begin poisoning them. If a troggle is destroyed, it explodes in a shower of spikes.</p>
<p><b>DC 30:</b> Troggles are given specific criteria to identify friends and foes. It is possible that, if one could learn these criteria, one could fool them.</p>

<p><b>Special:</b> A blackguard must have started as a paladin of a good or lawful good god, and must have fallen. The specific form the paladin&#8217;s fall takes is up to the player and GM to decide, but frequently this involves an outside influence such as a devil, demon, or angel of an evil god influencing the paladin.</p>
<p>As exemplars of their gods, paladins exist as ideals as much as warriors. A good paladin is a true scourge to all who are at home in the darkness. It is, thankfully, rare for such a paladin to be coerced to the side of evil, but that doesn&#8217;t stop agents of dark powers from trying. Such a fallen paladin is a truly terrible foe, serving his new master with as much cruelty and ruthlessness as he formerly possessed compassion and honor.</p>
<h2>Blackguard Path Features</h2>
<p><b>Dark Majesty (11th level):</b> Any time you use an item or power with the radiant keyword or which deals radiant damage, replace that with the necrotic keyword and/or necrotic damage. In addition, you gain the &#8220;Channel Divinity: Soul Feast&#8221; power.</p>
<p><b>Soul-draining Action (11th level):</b> When you spend an action point to take an extra action, you deal necrotic damage equal to your charisma modifier to all creatures within 3 squares of yourself and gain temporary hitpoints equal to the total damage dealt.</p>
<p><b>Righteous Ambivalence (16th level):</b> You gain resistance to necrotic and radiant damage equal to 5 + 1/2 your level.</p>

<p>The Skreed Herder is never encountered without several undead minions. It uses its goad ability to intercept enemies who approach too close, and uses necrotic ray when there are no more undead for it to goad. Its touch of the Grave ability is used only as a last defense, it prefers to stay out of melee. </p>

<p><b>DC 15:</b> The Skreed are a race of rat-like humanoids which hail from the Shadowfell.<br />
<b>DC 20:</b> Skreed are known for their affinity for necromantic magic, and are often found with undead minions. Skreed are also capable of striking fear into the hearts of their enemies.<br />
<b>DC 25:</b> The Skreed are resistant to necrotic damage, but vulnerable to radiant. They were once humans, but were cursed by the gods for their endemic usage of necromancy.
