I’ve made a compilation of the 27 monsters released so far here on Encounter-a-Day. I plan on updating the compilation regularly, maybe once a month or so.

Grab it now!

By the way, you should still check it out even if you’ve downloaded all the PDFs I’ve released until now. I’ve updated the style so it looks a bit nicer.

The story goes that thousands of years ago, some of the greatest magical talents from across the world banded together to form The Sapphire Guard. Their mission was to protect and shepherd the world through domination, and they very nearly achieved it. The guard was only defeated when an ancient god of magic– taxed already by the heavy and concentrated powers invoked by The Sapphire Guard– was slain. Immediately, all magic left the world, and it would be centuries before it returned. The Sapphire Guard was defeated, but the price was a heavy one.

Not all of the guard was destroyed, though; the few survivors met together at a secret rallying point. How many were in attendance varies wildly by who’s telling the story, from anywhere as few as two to as many as several hundred. They had lost their magic, but they had not lost their ambition, and they still sought to control the entire world.

A new pact was formed, The Sapphire Covenant. Under the covenant, the survivors of The Sapphire Guard would split up and each take on an apprentice. They would propagate their lines in secret, and each line would always consist of exactly one master and exactly one apprentice. Part of the covenant requires each line to actively hunt down and assassinate each other, both to enforce the veil of secrecy and to ensure only the strongest survive.

The survivors had gained their power through determination, and that determination also remained with them. As much effort as they had given to the study of the arcane arts, they now poured into study of the blade. In time, they and their apprentices would become some of the greatest fighters history had ever known.

When magic returned to the world, The Sapphire Covenant was quick to adopt it. Now, they are known both for their formidable prowess in magic and in swordsmanship.

Blood Elves, or Sin’dorei (meaning “Children of the Blood” in their native Thalassian tongue), are a somewhat tragic race. Like the other Azerothian elves, the sin’dorei have suffered from an addiction to magic. It’s hit them particularly hard, though, and with the loss of their Sunwell they have resorted to dark and fel magics to get their fix.

As a result, blood elves are largely mistrusted or despised, with some exceptions. It’s true that many of their numbers fall fully into madness from their arcane addiction. These elves truly deserve their sobriquet of “The Wretched,” for truly they are wretched creatures. Rather than trying to resist, they give themselves fully to the hunt for magical energy, and will risk anything and stop at nothing to sate their thirst for it.

Still, at least as many of the blood elves take pains to hold back their addiction. To these strong ones, the idea of becoming one of the wretched is a fate worse than death. Alone or together, it is every blood elf’s goal to find a cure for their race’s affliction.

For a much more indepth description of blood elves, see their entry on WoWWiki.

In particular, it seems that your opinion depends heavily on which the side of the table the slivers are played on…

Well, now you can make your D&D players feel that unrelenting hatred as well, as I present you with three slivers for 4th edition!

The Sliver Drone is the most basic of slivers, a weakling on its own which poses a threat only by copying other slivers’ abilities.

The Scaldvein Sliver makes its buddies’ blood boil–literally. Stay out of melee when this guy’s around, a every wound releases a bloody steam.

Finally, the Venomvoice Sliver helps by giving the hive the ability to reach out and touch someone… with a nice big gob of venom.
