Once I realized how similar that was to 4th edition’s bloodied mechanic, I realized that I just had to go and stat up some of Zendikar’s vampires!

Flavor wise, I’ll leave you with the description given by the Magic creative team.

Vampires live openly in Guul Draz and are famed for the decadence and perversion of their lifestyle. Bloodchiefs, the progenitors of their race, control the opulent city of Malakir. Vampire society is divided by “family” allegiances, each family beholden to its Bloodchief. Each family controls a small amount of territory and routes through the swamp, although the main currency of any family is in its connections and relationships. The tastes and passions of the Bloodchief tend to be imprinted on the vampires he or she creates.

There are five greater families in Guul Draz: Nirkana, Kalastria, Emevera, Urnaav, and Ghet. Dozens of other lesser families are scattered across Guul Draz, each with a contingent of undead nulls appropriate to their place in vampire society. Whenever a vampire fully drains the blood of a living creature without destroying the husk, a vampire null is created from the body. If nulls are left without orders, they will hunt and kill living things that they can find.

Tactics

Nulls swarm enemies, attacking mindlessly and attempting to maneuver to give flanking bonuses to the true vampires. The bloodletter dances through the melee, attempting to keep as many foes bloodied as possible at all times. Lacerators use their claws only as a last resort, prefering to grab and bite their enemies even when the enemy isn’t bloodied. The vampires stay hidden until someone’s bloodied, and then concentrate on the bloodied foe(s).

Marrowgrim is a fairly affluent city located where the Sinhe River and Yellow Peaks nearly run along-side each other. It started off as a small mining town, growing fat off the gold from which the Yellow Peaks take their names, and the river allowed for convenient shipping. It didn’t take long for a bustling trading town and eventually large metropolis to take route there.

Many generations ago, the miners dug too deep and broke through into the lava tubes. All of the men working the mines that day died, and work ground to a halt. A few weeks later, work would resume once more, thanks in no small part to inflated wages to entice more workers. A month after that, lava flooded the mines once more, burning dozens alive.

Men are nothing if not stubborn, particularly when gold is involved, but after three similar incidents over the course of the next year, it got to the point where no one was willing to work the mines for any price. Trade continued thanks to the Sinhe, but the city was reduced to a shadow of its former glory.

Many generations later, the city was attacked by a lich named Krool’thex, who easily overwhelmed the modest defenses. Krool’thex was mostly interested in the mines, though. He animated zombies and skeletons to work them, but this proved inefficient. Though they did not complain, the sheer number of corpses required and frequency of the lava breakthroughs was inconvenient, to say the least.

Then Krool’thex had a breakthrough. He developed a lesser form of the ritual used to convert himself into a lich, and used this to create his new servants. These liches were little more threatening than they had been in life and retained their sentience, and the up-front costs were huge in comparison to animating lesser undead.

It paid for itself soon after, though, when lava once more wiped through the mines. Krool’thex had but to wait a few days and all of his servants had regrown and were once more forced to work the mines. The lich-king of the city used his wealth and free labor to construct himself a magnificent palace in Marrowgrim, and at the heart of the palace is a vault where all his slaves’ phylacteries are kept.

Today, Marrowgrim is even more successful than it was in ages past. Most are unaware of Krool’thex’s undead labor force, and those who do know of it overlook it in light of the profits to be made at the town. The city itself has become a bit of a hot spot for the surrounding nobility, who like to vacation there due to the surprisingly-complete lack of “riff-raff.” Free from beggars and thieves, the nobles walk the streets freely and peruse the varied goods which come along the river. For his part, Krool’thex seems content to enjoy the finer things in un-life and watch his city grow.

Encounters at Marrowgrim

The PCs meet a lich-slave who’s managed to run off from work. The slave begs for the peace of the grave, but unless the PCs can destroy his phylactery he’ll never get it.

The PCs are hired by a man who claims to be the rightful heir to the city’s throne, from before it was taken over by Krool’thex. The man tasks them with destroying the lich’s phylactery and then the lich himself, so that the city might once more return to his family.

Krool’thex quickly assimilates any foolish enough to beg in his city into his workforce. However, this is not enough to satisfy his ambitions, and the PCs discover that he’s arranging for merchants to kidnap beggars and vagrants from other cities and smuggle them Marrowgrim. This raises the question of exactly why Krool’thex needs so many slaves, as well…

Algrecht is a sly little man, unassuming but clearly intelligent. He is courteous to a fault, though often seems to have a smirk as if something reminds him of a joke he once heard.

Algrecht befriends one of the PCs, the sneaky one who secretly fancies himself an assassin (there’s always one). He even gives that character a little trinket, a gem which destroys dead bodies without a trace. Handy for covering your tracks!

That’s not exactly what the gem does, though. In actuality, rather than destroy the body, it teleports it to a pocket dimension which only Algrecht can access. He’s given these gems to many people, and uses this steady stream of fresh corpses to create an undead horde. He’s just waiting for it to reach the necessary critical mass to begin his plans…

We, who seek to coexist peacefully and lawfully, and who through no fault of our own, but through birth, circumstance or affliction, are branded monster, must take it upon ourselves to improve our lot in this life, for there are none who would give us aid or succor in our times of need but we brothers in exile. -Opening line of Zortago’s Manifesto

The Brothers in Exile are a group of “monsters” which seek to live peacefully. The brothers include lycanthropes, intelligent undead, intelligent beasts, and others whose mere appearance is enough to get “normal” people up in arms.

They were founded by a minotaur named Zortago. Zortago actually had a home, once. He’d been secretly sleeping in a barn to wait out a terrible storm, when he heard people shouting for a lost child. Zortago snuck out to search for the boy, and found him at the same time as the townspeople; the boy was pinned under a tree in a small depression which was rapidly filling with water. He lifted the tree, allowing the boy to slip free just in time to avoid drowning, and he was allowed to stay in the town ever since.

Things were okay for a while, but peoples’ memories can be short, and soon some of them grew to distrust him. Eventually, the family which had put him up found themselves at odds with the other townspeople, and though the boy and his parents implored Zortago to stay, he left so that they could find peace.

Through his travels, Zortago eventually met a wereboar named Lysander, who’d been thrown out of his village after contracting his condition, and a ghoul called Jhourgmand who took pains to only eat the carrion left behind by the kills of other creatures.

Today, the Brothers in Exile operate three monasteries. Zortago and Lysander each head one, and the third is headed by a vampire named Kelstas. Zortago’s monastery is located in a valley and provides aid to several nearby villages. Lysander’s is located near the summit of a mountain, far from any civilization. Kelstas’s is located in a forest replete with wildlife and caters to those with special dietary requirements, like Jhourgmand and Kelstas himself.

Encounters with The Brothers in Exile

The PCs’ benefactor tells them of a haven of evil not far, where horrendous creatures congregate and terrorize the hillside, lead by a ferocious minotaur.

A PC’s loved one is dying of a disease which can only be cured by a mummy, and he learns there may be one at Lysander’s monastery.

For hundreds of years, the city of Rastonia has been under the de facto rule of three guilds of varying legitimacy: The Moneylenders, the Shadow Guild, and the Crafters’ Guild. Each of the guilds is headed by a vampire, the three of which make no attempts to hide their nature.

The Moneylenders is headed by Lord de Blays, and as the name implies it is a guild of bankers. The guild’s reach is far and as a result its coffers deep, for it is actually quite active all throughout the country and neighboring states as well. A moneylender agent can be found in every large city and many smaller ones as well, and offer travelers a safe and convenient way to store and transfer funds. They also make many investments, including backing both business ventures and exploration. Of the three vampire lords, de Blays schemes the least and seems more or less content to run an honest trade.

The Shadow Guild, headed by Lord Marchant, is well known to be involved in many highly-illegal activities, but it continues to exist because it would be incredibly difficult to oppose. Marchant has spies everywhere, it seems, and if he cannot bribe you he’ll kill you. The Shadow Guild facilitates everything from gambling to protection rackets to slave trading.

Lady Puchot of the Crafters’ Guild originally hailed from Shentreau. Her background is less a mystery than the other two vampires; it’s known that she was one of the first great artists to emerge from the city. Her art gained her the attention of another vampire, and thus gained her her immortality. The Crafters’ Guild reaches out to artisans of all types and has established trade schools in some of the larger cities. Lady Puchot herself seems nice, and is quite lovely, but she gives off an intensely ominous vibe. No one can quite put their finger on it, but any who meet her immediately get the feeling that she has some great scheme working.

Each of the guilds is quite wide-spread, and so many find it odd that the three would all be based in an otherwise-unassuming city such as Rastonia. This leads many to believe that there is some connection among the vampires, but if there is it is unclear.

Encounters with The Vampire City

Lady Puchot, having heard about a wonderful new talent in Shentreau, could hire the PCs to bring her the artist known as “M.”

The PCs find a gang of thugs harassing an old woman who runs a pottery stand. After sending them off, the thugs warn them that they’ve incurred the wrath of The Shadow Guild. Sure enough, they soon find themselves being targeted by thieves, leg-breakers, assassins and worse.

Lord Marchant hears about a particularly daring and skillful bit of thievery performed by one of the PCs, and invites the character to Rastonia. Marchant wants to recruit him, and will not take no as an answer.

Despite relatively sophisticated magical techniques, someone is forging counterfeit letters of credit and defrauding The Moneylenders of large sums of gold. Lord de Blays hires the PCs to find out who’s doing it, how, and to put a stop to it by any means necessary.

all afflicted with the lazarus plague succumb to it. Whether they have some innate immunity or just an indomitable will to live, some continue living on despite it. Well, not living, so much, as persisting in a state between life and death.

Like all those afflicted by the plague, the ravaged wither and atrophy. However, their muscles and tissue at some point cease their decay. The end result is that ravaged have tight, gray skin with a dessicated appearance. All of their hair falls out, and their eyes become dark as the night.

Needless to say, the appearance of the ravaged is quite disconcerting. Some use this to their advantage to intimidate people, but most try and hide their appearance under baggy clothing and deep hoods. Few places willingly harbor the ravaged. Most, understanding that it’s not the poor being’s fault, just urge them along, but some places kill them on sight.

One notable exception is the Kamit pyramid-city Nertiti, now also known by the sobriquet “The Necropolis.” While most of the death-worshipping dwarves believe the ravaged to be terrible mockeries of death, the pharaoh of Nertiti decided that the ravaged are actually blessed by death, walking two worlds at once. He actively sends envoys abroad to seek out the ravaged and invite them to a new home. There are even rumors that the pharaoh is trying to infect himself with the lazarus plague, sure that he’ll become a ravaged.

Encounters with the Ravaged

Nostorin was once the son of the mayor of Lieberton, until he was stricken with the lazarus plague. He was abandoned in the middle of the forest, left for dead, so as to minimize the spread of the disease, but he did not die. He tried returning home, but when they saw him he was run out of town and would have been killed if he hadn’t found a good hiding place.

He’s been living on the fringes of society for several weeks now, careful to hide his identity, and has heard rumors about a “promised land” of sorts for people like him, a city in the desert called The Necropolis. Unfortunately, it is far away and the lands between here and there are still being ravaged by the plague. Any who recognized him for what he is would likely kill him on sight.

Thus, Nostorin needs some able bodied escorts. He has a small amount of money to pay them, as he managed to sneak into his old house and take his things. The PCs could come upon Nostorin fleeing for his life after being discovered, or might be approached by the cliché “mysterious stranger” in the corner of the tavern.
